California“I began working with April in January 2021. I went to her because I felt like food was becoming too overwhelming. I was the biggest I had ever been, I was 2-month post op from a big ankle surgery, my family was having their own struggles with food and I was in a really bad place because of all of it. I had been trying to lose weight for 9 years. I had tried it all. Paleo, the juice/liquid diet, the military diet, keto, etc… I failed. Over and over again. I had gotten to the point where I just accepted that I was going to be overweight and out of shape for the rest of my life.
After my first meeting with April, I felt hopeful and excited but best of all, I didn’t feel overwhelmed! I didn’t feel the dread of “I am about to start a diet so I need to eat everything I am going to miss all in one night!” She asked me to log everything I normally ate for a week. No changes. Then I sent her that info and from there she created a plan for me. She had me start counting macros but she broke it down to where it was manageable for me. I started with protein. I needed to hit a certain goal for my protein intake every day. Over time, the rest came easy.
She taught me how to make smarter substitutions without feeling like I was missing out on things I loved to eat. She even encouraged me to treat myself every day!
In March, when my ankle had healed up a bit more, I began working on my fitness. I believe I was still in a big boot when I started. She was very cautious with my injury every step of the way – she still is. She has been encouraging and patient. She explains things to me 100 times until I understand how to move my body and the weight efficiently and safely.
In this process I have found a hobby. I have fallen in love with lifting weights. I have fallen in love with myself! I have watched my weight and my overall appearance shrink, while the weight on the bar keeps going up. On days I get frustrated with myself, she is there to cheer me on. Our sessions are always fun and silly. I honestly can’t remember the last time I looked in the mirror and liked what I saw. Now I don’t hide from the mirror, or from cameras. I am proud of myself and the work I am doing. I would not be here without her. She is awesome!”
